Cooler Temperatures And Gusty Winds Arrive In Chattooga County This Weekend
A strong cold front has brought a significant change in the weather to Chattooga County, with much cooler temperatures, gusty winds and dry conditions expected throughout the weekend.
Saturday will be sunny but noticeably cooler, with a high near 62 degrees. North winds of 10 to 15 mph could gust as high as 30 mph. A Wind Advisory remains in effect through noon Saturday for portions of north and northeast Georgia, where gusts could reach 35 to 40 mph.
The National Weather Service is urging residents to use caution around weakened trees and loose limbs, particularly in areas that experienced damage from Hurricane Isaias last weekend. Gusty winds could bring down branches or trees that were weakened during the storm. Residents should also secure loose outdoor furniture and decorations.
Saturday night will be clear and chilly, with temperatures dropping to around 42 degrees. North winds could continue gusting as high as 25 mph during the evening.
Sunday will bring plenty of sunshine and a high near 67 degrees, followed by another cold night with temperatures falling to around 40 degrees. Some mountain locations in northeast Georgia could experience their first frost of the season.
Looking ahead, dry weather is expected to continue throughout next week, with temperatures gradually warming. Monday will be sunny with a high near 69, followed by 72 on Tuesday, 76 on Wednesday, 77 on Thursday and 79 by Friday.
The National Weather Service says rain chances will remain near zero over the next seven days, providing an extended stretch of sunny skies and pleasant fall weather across Northwest Georgia.
Chattooga And Trion Fall In Friday Night Football Action
Both Chattooga County high school football teams suffered losses Friday night, October 16, as the Chattooga Indians fell to the Dade County Wolverines at home and the Trion Bulldogs saw their five-game winning streak come to an end on the road against Bowdon.
The Chattooga Indians returned to the Little Big Horn in Summerville Friday night following an open week, but the Dade County Wolverines came away with a commanding 54-14 victory.
Chattooga entered Friday night’s contest hoping to build on its 38-22 Homecoming victory over Gordon Central on October 2, which gave the Indians their first win of the season.
The loss drops Chattooga to 1-6 overall and 1-2 in Region 7-AA competition.
Meanwhile, the Trion Bulldogs traveled to Bowdon Friday night riding a five-game winning streak, but the Bowdon Red Devils brought that streak to an end with a 34-7 victory.
Trion entered the matchup following an impressive 50-0 shutout of Greenville last week in its region opener. Friday night’s loss drops the Bulldogs to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in Region 7-A competition.
Both Chattooga and Trion will look to regroup as the regular season continues, with teams competing for postseason positioning.
Next Friday, October 23, Chattooga travels to Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe, while Trion returns home to face Manchester.
Major Donation Helps CRC Chattooga Reach $262,000 Roof Replacement Goal
A major donation from a local foundation has helped CRC Chattooga reach its fundraising goal for a much-needed roof replacement, marking an important milestone for the community organization.
The Frank P. Pierce Foundation recently presented CRC Chattooga with a $130,000 check, providing the final funding needed for the organization’s roof replacement project.
The donation brings CRC Chattooga’s fundraising total to approximately $262,000, allowing the organization to move forward with replacing the roof on its facility.
The donation was made through the Atrium Health Floyd Giving July’s Dancing With Our Stars event, which helped generate support for the project.
CRC Chattooga provides a gathering place for community members, including senior citizens, offering opportunities for fellowship, activities and social interaction.
Organization representatives say the roof replacement is an important investment in the building’s future, ensuring the facility can continue serving residents for years to come.
The organization expressed appreciation to the Frank P. Pierce Foundation and Atrium Health Floyd for their support, along with community members who contributed to the fundraising effort.
CRC Chattooga said the generosity of its supporters will have an impact far beyond the building itself, helping the organization continue providing a welcoming environment for neighbors throughout the community.

Summerville Police Respond To Complaint About Loose Dogs On Woods Street
Summerville Police responded to a complaint involving several loose dogs in a residential neighborhood after a woman reported that the animals had been running loose and chasing people.
According to a Summerville Police Department incident report, police were dispatched to 123 Woods Street on Friday, October 9, at approximately 10:37 PM, after receiving a complaint about Great Danes running loose in the neighborhood.
The complainant, identified as 54-year-old Carla Kelly, told police that the dogs had been scaring residents and chasing people. She said the dogs belonged to a neighbor at 127 Woods Street.
Kelly told police that her son had been forced to take cover inside a vehicle when the dogs came outside and began approaching him.
She also reported that the neighbor had constructed a fence around the property, but the dogs were still able to escape. According to Kelly, the fence was approximately four feet tall, and the Great Danes were tall enough to jump over it.
Police observed the fence and noted that it appeared to be approximately the same height as the dogs.
The officer was unable to speak with the dogs’ owner because she was reportedly out of town and was not expected to return until Monday evening.
Police documented the complaint in an incident report. No citations or arrests were reported in connection with the incident.
Chattooga County Accepting Applications For Two Job Openings
Chattooga County is currently accepting applications for two employment opportunities, including positions with the county’s Water Department and Sanitation Department.
The openings include a Water Maintenance Technician and a Sanitation CDL Driver, with pay for both positions based on experience and qualifications.
Water Maintenance Technician
The Chattooga County Water Department is seeking a maintenance technician to assist with the operation, repair and upkeep of the county’s water system.
Responsibilities include operating equipment and machinery used in water system construction and maintenance, transporting materials, performing repairs, reading and assisting with water meters, and responding to customer service needs.
The position also involves working outdoors in various weather conditions and assisting with emergency repairs when necessary.
Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED, a valid driver’s license and at least six months of experience in equipment operation, construction, maintenance or a related field. Equivalent combinations of education, training and experience may also be considered.
A Class A commercial driver’s license and a Class 3 Water Operator License are preferred qualifications.
Applications are available at the Chattooga County Water Department, 1685 Old Highway 27 in Trion, or at the Chattooga County Commissioner’s Office, 10102 Commerce Street in Summerville.
Sanitation CDL Driver
Chattooga County is also accepting applications for a CDL driver with the county’s Sanitation Department.
The position involves operating county sanitation trucks and equipment to collect, transport and dispose of solid waste.
Duties include driving assigned routes, loading and unloading garbage, inspecting vehicles and equipment, and maintaining safe operating conditions.
Applicants must have a valid Class A or Class B commercial driver’s license, a valid medical card and a safe driving record. They must also meet applicable federal CDL requirements.
A high school diploma or GED is preferred, along with previous experience operating commercial trucks or sanitation equipment.
Experience in solid waste collection, construction, maintenance or related work is also preferred.
Applications for the sanitation position may be picked up at the Chattooga County Commissioner’s Office, 10102 Commerce Street in Summerville, or at the Chattooga County Sanitation Department or Public Works Office.

Free Food Giveaway Scheduled For Monday In Summerville
A community food distribution event will take place Monday, October 19, in Summerville, giving eligible residents an opportunity to receive free groceries.

SpaceX Astronaut And Former Air Force Thunderbird To Speak At Berry College
A former U.S. Air Force Thunderbird pilot who went on to become a SpaceX astronaut will share his experiences during a special lecture at Berry College in Rome later this month.
Scott “Kidd” Poteet, a retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel, will speak Thursday, October 29, at 6 PM in the Krannert Ballroom as part of the college’s Cecil B. Wright III Integrity in Leadership Lecture Series. The event is free and open to the public.
Poteet served 20 years in the U.S. Air Force, including service as a pilot with the elite Thunderbirds aerial demonstration team. During his military career, he commanded numerous missions around the world.
Following his military service, Poteet fulfilled a childhood dream of traveling into space. He was a member of the historic five-day Polaris Dawn mission aboard a SpaceX spacecraft launched by a Falcon 9 rocket.
In addition to his military and spaceflight accomplishments, Poteet is an accomplished endurance athlete who has competed in 16 Ironman triathlons, including the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii.
During his presentation at Berry College, Poteet will discuss leadership, humility, finding personal purpose and overcoming challenges. He is expected to share how he overcame obstacles, including motion sickness and a fear of heights, while pursuing his goals.

Saturday Early Voting Underway Today In Chattooga County
Chattooga County voters have an opportunity to cast their ballots today, Saturday, October 17, as the first weekend of early voting gets underway ahead of the November 3 General Election.
The Chattooga County Registrar’s Office will be open today from 9 AM until 5 PM for voters wishing to cast their ballots early.
All advance voting in Chattooga County takes place at the Registrar’s Office, located at 10017 Commerce Street in Summerville.
Early voting began Tuesday and continues through Friday, October 30. Another Saturday voting opportunity will be available October 24, also from 9 AM until 5 PM.
Regular weekday voting hours are 8:30 AM until 5 PM through October 23. During the final week of early voting, October 26 through October 30, hours will be extended until 6 PM. There will be no Sunday voting in Chattooga County.
In addition to choosing candidates for federal, state and local offices, Chattooga County voters will decide several ballot questions, including renewal of the county’s education sales tax, proposed changes to homestead exemptions and a bond referendum for voters living in the Town of Trion.
Voters must bring an acceptable form of photo identification, such as a Georgia driver’s license or state-issued identification card.
The deadline to request an absentee ballot is Friday, October 23. The General Election takes place Tuesday, November 3.

Major I-285 Closure Begins Tonight In Metro Atlanta
Motorists traveling to the Atlanta area this weekend should prepare for significant traffic delays as the Georgia Department of Transportation plans to close a section of Interstate 285 in both directions beginning tonight.
According to GDOT, all northbound and southbound lanes of I-285 between South Atlanta Road at Exit 16 and South Cobb Drive at Exit 15 will close beginning at 7 PM tonight, Friday, October 16.
The closure is expected to remain in effect until 5 AM Monday, October 19, weather permitting.
The affected section of interstate is located along the western side of Atlanta’s Perimeter Highway in the Smyrna area.
During the closure, traffic will be redirected onto designated detour routes using Interstate 75, the Interstate 75/85 Connector and Interstate 20. Roadside signs and electronic message boards will help direct motorists around the construction zone.
The closure is part of GDOT’s ongoing I-285 Westside Rebuild Project, which involves repairing and replacing deteriorating concrete roadway sections between Collier Drive in Fulton County and Paces Ferry Road in Cobb County.
The project also includes improvements to roadway shoulders, concrete medians, guardrails, signs and traffic management systems.
The construction project is scheduled for completion in 2029.
A similar closure originally scheduled for last weekend was canceled because of heavy rain associated with Hurricane Isaias.
GDOT is encouraging drivers to plan ahead, allow additional travel time and consider alternate routes, particularly during busy weekend travel periods.
Motorists from Chattooga County and Northwest Georgia traveling through the Atlanta area should be aware that the closure could affect their routes, especially those using I-285 on the western side of the city.

Walker County Commissioners Schedule Special Meeting To Discuss Forensic Audit
The Walker County Board of Commissioners has scheduled a special called meeting for Tuesday, October 20, 2026, to hear a presentation concerning a forensic audit of county government.

Georgia Employment Reaches Record Highs For Ninth Consecutive Month
Georgia’s workforce continued setting records in September, with the state’s labor force and number of employed residents reaching all-time highs for the ninth consecutive month, according to new figures released by the Georgia Department of Labor.
The state’s labor force increased by 13,679 people in September, reaching a record 5,504,015 workers. That represents an increase of more than 73,000 people compared with September 2025.
The number of employed Georgians also reached a record high of 5,325,131, an increase of 10,279 over the previous month and more than 80,000 over the past year.
Georgia’s unemployment rate edged up slightly to 3.3% in September. However, the rate remained one-tenth of a percentage point below September 2025 and nine-tenths of a percentage point below the national unemployment rate.
Georgia Labor Commissioner Bárbara Rivera Holmes said the figures demonstrate the continued strength of the state’s workforce and employment opportunities.
“Georgia’s workforce is making history,” Holmes said, pointing to nine consecutive months of record employment and historically low unemployment claims.
Unemployment Claims Reach Lowest Level In More Than 50 Years
One of the most significant developments in the September report was a sharp decline in initial unemployment claims.
Georgia recorded just 15,874 initial unemployment claims during September, a decrease of 953 from August and 3,140 fewer than a year earlier.
According to the Department of Labor, the state had not recorded a monthly claims total that low since April 1974, more than half a century ago.
Despite the record employment figures, the number of unemployed Georgians increased by 3,400 in September to 178,884. That figure was still down by 7,643 compared with the previous year.
Some Industries Add Jobs While Others See Declines
While the number of employed residents increased, Georgia’s total number of payroll jobs declined slightly in September, falling by 500 to 4,983,000.
The largest monthly job gains occurred in local government, which added 3,300 positions, followed by professional and technical services with 1,600 additional jobs.
State government, manufacturing and wholesale trade also reported employment gains.
However, several industries experienced declines. Private educational services lost 1,600 jobs, while health care and social assistance declined by 1,400. Accommodation and food services lost 1,100 positions.
Over the past year, health care and social assistance recorded the largest employment gains, adding 18,900 jobs statewide.
Other industries showing annual growth included local government, manufacturing and administrative support services.
Meanwhile, federal government employment declined by 8,800 jobs over the year, while professional and technical services lost 8,600 positions. Construction employment was down by 4,900 jobs.

The Georgia Department of Labor continues to provide employment assistance and unemployment insurance services to residents throughout the state, including Chattooga County and Northwest Georgia.

Job seekers and employers can also use the Georgia LaborMarket Explorer to review employment trends, available workforce information and regional labor market statistics.
The September report reflects statewide employment conditions. Separate unemployment figures for Chattooga County were not included in the announcement.
Veterans Expected To Receive 3.6% Increase In VA Disability Payments In 2027
Veterans across Chattooga County and Northwest Georgia who receive disability compensation from the Department of Veterans Affairs are expected to see an increase in their monthly benefits beginning in January 2027.
The increase follows Wednesday’s announcement by the Social Security Administration that benefits will rise 3.6% in 2027, reflecting the annual cost-of-living adjustment, commonly known as COLA.
VA disability compensation increases are generally tied to the same percentage adjustment used for Social Security benefits. However, the 2027 increase in VA disability compensation still requires congressional approval before the new payment amounts become official.
The adjustment is intended to help veterans and their families keep pace with rising costs for groceries, housing, utilities and other everyday expenses.
How Much More Will Veterans Receive?
Based on the announced 3.6% adjustment, a veteran with a 100% disability rating and no dependents would see monthly compensation increase from $3,938.58 to approximately $4,080.37, an increase of about $141.79 per month.
For a veteran with a 50% disability rating and no dependents, monthly compensation would increase from $1,132.90 to approximately $1,173.68, an increase of $40.78.
Veterans with a 10% disability rating would see payments rise from $180.42 to approximately $186.92 per month.
Those figures are estimates based on current compensation rates and the announced cost-of-living adjustment. The VA has not yet published its official 2027 disability compensation tables.
When Will The Increase Take Effect?
If approved by Congress, the new rates would take effect December 1, 2026, with the higher monthly payments beginning in January 2027.
The increase would apply to eligible veterans receiving disability compensation, with the actual dollar amount depending on their disability rating and qualifying dependents.
Certain benefits for surviving spouses and dependents are also expected to receive cost-of-living adjustments.
The Social Security Administration says its 3.6% increase will affect approximately 76 million Americans receiving Social Security or Supplemental Security Income benefits. The average Social Security retirement benefit is expected to increase by about $75 per month.
Veterans receiving both Social Security and VA disability compensation may see adjustments to both benefits, depending on their eligibility.
Veterans generally will not need to submit a new disability claim simply to receive the annual cost-of-living increase once it is authorized.
The Department of Veterans Affairs is expected to release official updated compensation rates after the necessary legislation is approved.

A 60-year-old man was arrested following a high-speed pursuit through Chattooga County after a sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop a vehicle driven by a man reportedly wanted in two other Georgia counties.
According to a Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office arrest report, the incident began on Friday, October 9, 2026, at approximately 10:15 AM, near the intersection of East Halls Valley Road and Mountain View Road.
A Chattooga County deputy spotted a white Hyundai Elantra and recognized the driver as William Riley Brock, 60, who reportedly had outstanding arrest warrants in Floyd and Bartow counties.
The deputy also had information that Brock was driving an unregistered vehicle without a properly displayed license plate.
According to the report, the deputy observed the vehicle accelerating rapidly and producing heavy exhaust smoke. After confirming that the vehicle was traveling at an excessive speed, the deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop.
Instead of stopping, Brock allegedly accelerated and began driving recklessly, crossing into opposing lanes of traffic and disregarding traffic signs.
The pursuit continued along East Halls Valley Road, Halls Valley Drive and Highway 27, where the deputy reported speeds ranging from approximately 80 to 120 miles per hour.
According to the report, Brock continued driving at high speeds through the intersections of Ridgeway Drive and Chattooga Line Road, repeatedly crossing the centerline and traveling on the wrong side of the roadway.
The deputy reported that Brock also failed to stop at several intersections, including the area of Walnut Grove Road and Old Trion Highway.
Additional law enforcement officers responded to assist as the pursuit continued. Officers positioned themselves near an intersection with emergency lights activated and tire-deflation equipment ready for deployment.
Brock was subsequently arrested.
The arrest report lists charges including fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, aggressive driving, reckless driving, speeding, failure to maintain lane, failure to stop at a stop sign, operating a motor vehicle without proper registration and other traffic offenses.
Woman Arrested Following Domestic Dispute On Packer Dairy Road
A 37-year-old woman was arrested following a domestic dispute on Packer Dairy Road in Chattooga County after deputies reported that she became disorderly while emergency medical personnel were evaluating her.
According to a Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office arrest report, deputies responded to 602 Packer Dairy Road on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at approximately 3:18 PM.
Deputies were told that Jasmine Reed, 37, had been involved in an argument with her boyfriend, who reportedly left the area before law enforcement arrived.
Family members expressed concerns that Reed might be intoxicated and requested that emergency medical personnel evaluate her.
Deputies reported that Reed was initially calm and cooperative. EMS personnel arrived and began evaluating her, and Reed walked toward the ambulance.
According to the report, a deputy was speaking with a family member about the eviction process when he heard a loud noise near the ambulance.
The deputy reported finding the ambulance’s rear door open and Reed yelling that she would not go to the hospital and would have to be taken to jail.
Reed allegedly became increasingly belligerent and was placed under arrest.
Deputies reported that she continued yelling and using profanity while being transported to the Chattooga County Jail.
According to the arrest report, Reed also remained uncooperative with jail personnel and refused to answer routine questions.
Reed was charged with disorderly conduct in connection with the incident.
